Anzac Cove is named after the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, which landed there as part of operations on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey during World War 1. During the eight months of combat between Allied and Ottoman forces, the ANZAC soldiers would often go swimming in the water off the pebble beach, despite heavy shelling and sniper fire. Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance for citizens of both Australia and New Zealand, and Anzac Cove is a pilgrimage site for those who pay tribute to those who fought in the First World War.
